Christian McCaffrey has been one of the best running backs in the league since being selected 8th overall in the 2017 NFL Draft. He is among the league’s best-receiving backs, which makes him as versatile as anyone. With the firing of Panthers head coach Matt Rhule on Monday, this should signal the alarms for a complete rebuild in Carolina. There have been rumors about the Panthers potentially moving the 26-year-old, so in this article, we will take a look at five teams who should look to trade for Christian McCaffrey.
The Miami Dolphins already possess one of the most high-octane offenses in the league with weapons on the outside in Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill, who they acquired this offseason. Add in one of the best receiving backs in the league who will be a clear weapon both running and in the passing game? Miami appears to be employing a running back by committee approach but adding a guy of McCaffrey’s caliber would establish the Dolphins as one of the best offensive teams in the league.
The health of the running back room for the San Francisco 49ers has been brutal this year. Adding someone who has an injury history as McCaffrey has would be wishing for the best, but if he can stay healthy, a core of Deebo Samuel, George Kittle, and CMC would certainly make life easy for Jimmy Garoppolo. With Jeff Wilson playing well, a 1-2 punch of he and McCaffrey would keep NFC West defenses on their toes.
Don’t get me wrong, I love me some Miles Sanders. I love how he runs and can catch the ball out of the backfield. But you are kidding yourself if you think that McCaffrey isn’t an upgrade. The Eagles have the fourth-best rushing offense in the league and adding a guy of CMC’s caliber just brings another dynamic to the run game. Plus, I am sure the Eagles can gameplan some two running back formations to have both Sanders and CMC in the backfield to really throw off opposing defenses.
The Buffalo Bills are a running back away from being the kings of the NFL. I wrote a trade destination post for Saquon Barkley before the season started, and listed Buffalo as the top destination. I have Buffalo listed as two here only because of the top team (stay tuned for that). Devin Singletary is fine, and James Cook has loads of potential, but the Bills’ Super Bowl window is wide open right now, and if they want to take advantage of that, they MUST make this move and trade for McCaffrey.
Man, what a fantastic fit. Clyde Edwards-Helaire is the lite version of McCaffrey. CMC is a better pure running back, but his ability to catch the ball out of the backfield in this offense led by Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes is bound to get the best out of him. The Kansas City Chiefs would be foolish to not trade for CMC. They absolutely need to trade for McCaffrey to ensure a long run in the postseason.
