Stick with me here, as I have a few Jack and Cokes in my system. But I have something I want to get off my chest. Filet Mignon is hands down the most overrated cut of steak that you can find.
There I am at Valentine’s Day dinner with my girlfriend here in Florida, and I see the V-Day menu come out and it has an 8 oz filet mignon with shrimp, mashed potatoes, and asparagus. My carnivorous mindset sees steak and potatoes and I instantly think I need that in my life. Food comes out, a small cut of steak, two tree-sized pieces of asparagus, two big ass shrimps in the shape of a heart (how cute), and an ice cream scoop size of mashed potatoes. I enjoy my meal, my lady enjoys hers. While we are waiting for our dessert (lava cake for those who were wondering) I came to the realization that filet mignon is so grossly overrated it is a wonder anyone buys it. Let me explain.
I get the hype. Filet mignon is a super thick cut of steak, really rich, and if cooked right cuts like butter and melts in your mouth. It is the higher-end, boujee cut of steak if you want to show off to your friends. But I can not in good conscience spend $69 (nice) on a tiny ass steak like that that I finished in probably 8 bites or less. I do not care if I can cut the steak with the back of the knife. Know what I want instead? Give me a 14 oz ribeye that costs $50 or a little more. Let me devour a T-Bone which has two different cuts of meat on it, hence the T separating the cuts. Fat. Flavor. Still tender when it’s cooked to the perfect temp: medium. I don’t want any debate on it, just save it.
Fellas, it’s too late for me seeing that it’s already Valentine’s day and the dinner has come and gone. But if you have a birthday coming up, or a big anniversary or whatever the case may be. Save yourself the money and get a steak that’s simply just better. Case and point. I will never again waste money on getting filet mignon and I urge every other human walking the planet to not get it again either. You will be better off, I promise.
