I Feel Bad Marcus Smart Missed Out On The Celtics Championship

Can we choose not to be ignorant for a second? Marcus Smart poured his heart and soul out for the city of Boston. For a long time, Smart was the third guy and the team had a ton of success with him. It includes a Finals appearance (where they would have won if Timelord didn’t go down), multiple Conference Finals appearances, and a DPOY Award.

It’s hard not to feel for the guy. Yes, Jrue Holiday is the better player. I’m not denying that. All I ask is that NBA fans choose not to be ignorant about this. The truth of the matter is, if the first iteration of the Kristaps Porzingis trade is executed, Smart is still on the team and Boston still more than likely runs away with the title. Smart didn’t make enough money to match a potential trade for Holiday CBA-wise.

Smart weighed in on all of this and his answer was as classy as possible.

“… Shout out to Jaylen (Brown), Jayson (Tatum) and the Boston Celtics on the championship. Congratulations on the championship,” Smart told former NBA guard Theo Pinson on Tidal League’s “Run Your Race.” “They built that. They went through the mud. They didn’t skip any steps. I was with them for nine years of my career, and I seen it. It’s no coincidence that they reached their goal. I’m just so proud of them. I’m proud to be in the trenches with them, to know those guys and be able to work with them every day I had that chance to do.

“I know everyone is expecting me to be salty and (expletive). There’s no hard feelings from me. It’s definitely a bittersweet feeling. It’s definitely tough because I was in the trenches with them. To not be able to finish what you started with those guys is definitely tough, but man, (expletive), my wife will tell you I was screaming for those guys when they won it just as much as anybody else because I have love for those guys, and I know the work that they put in.”

All I ask is that the NBA universe treats Smart fairly in the aftermath of all of this. He was a great Celtic and probably deserves a championship ring, even though he has too much pride to accept one on his behalf.
