The fantasy hockey trade deadline has long passed but with Mikko Rantanen on the move to Dallas, I think this is an important trade to discuss further when it comes to the long term outlook. Young Andrew covered the original move in the trade deadline tracker but I think it’s time for me to do the fantasy follow-up on this whopper of a move.
Honestly, I think this one is pretty straight forward. Rantanen has been viewed as a top ten pick in fantasy for a long time. I don’t think that changes now that he’s in Dallas. Maybe he doesn’t have Nathan MacKinnon centering him but Roope Hintz brings that same speed element to the table and the rest of the supporting cast is loaded.
Rantanen, 28, has been skating on the top line with Hintz and Jason Robertson. That’s about as lethal of a top line as it gets. Not to mention that he and Hintz are both Finnish and have that countrymen connection. Then add Wyatt Johnston to the top powerplay unit with a healthy version of Miro Heiskanen… the dude is going to produce. Rantanen produced over 100 points in each of the prior two seasons. Once he’s really settled in Dallas, I expect that to continue.
If you’re in a keeper league and the league mate that owns Rantanen is nervous about him being away from MacKinnon, I would try to snag him for yourself. If you already own Rantanen, just sit there and smile. Given how loaded this Stars team is, I don’t see any reason why he can’t produce at an extremely high level and I’m not sure how complicated it really is.
