The Avalanche started the season with Alexandar Georgiev and Justusn Annunen. They have now dumped both of them. Annunen got shipped to Nashville in a deal that brought back Scott Wedgewood. Now the Georgiev problem has been taken care of after Mike Grier and the Sharks took him off their hands. Colorado will receive MacKenzie Blackwood in return.
Let’s talk about everything that needs to be discussed from a fantasy hockey perspective. If you play fantasy hockey like I do, you know that the goalie spot is a make-or-break spot. This is how I believe you should manage your team following this deal.
Avalanche:
If you’re desperate for a goalie, Blackwood is a good one to go claim. He’s owned in just 17% of ESPN fantasy league and that number was as low as 1% prior to the trade. Odds are you can still go get him. That’s on you if you’re slow to react. I get you the takes as soon as possible. I’m covering six sports at the same time. What more do you want from me?
Let me say this. I wouldn’t say Blackwood will be automatic for Colorado. It wasn’t too long ago that the guy was unplayable for New Jersey. It’s no guarantee Blackwood will step in there and shine with the Avs. They have be bad in terms of goal prevention regardless of who has been in net for the team. Maybe Colorado isn’t play well in front of those guys. They have top end talent but lack depth. When those 3rd and 4th lines have been out there, they have been pretty brutal as a team.
Let’s put it like this, I’m not dropping a capable goalie to take a shot on Blackwood. You’re only making this move if you’re cutting someone who isn’t getting the job done. AKA people who didn’t read the cheese list. Add Blackwood at your own discretion but don’t curse up a storm if he doesn’t save you. The biggest thing to note here is he’s worth the gamble given the fact that this is a team that should pick up wins down the stretch.
Sharks:
In terms of Georgiev, I think you already know what I’m going to say here. You should have never picked him. Shame on you for picking him. But now we’re in new territory. I’d argue there’s a chance he scores negative fantasy points for the remainder of the season on this team. We’re talking about a guy who sports a league worst .874 SV%. He now goes to the worst team in the league. How does this puppy get better?
Sure, Georgiev may snag a few wins here and there. The Sharks won’t lose every game. But in terms of being trustworthy? No way you trust this guy in your lineup. Especially in leagues that set them weekly.
Georgiev was droppable before. Now it’s not even a discussion. Even in the deepest of leagues, Georgiev should be owned in 0.00% of fantasy hockey leagues for the remainder of the 2024-25 NHL Season. Until Georgiev proves he can rebuild his value and gets traded away from the Sharks, we can revisit that talking point then.
