Apparently, the Ducks can’t get enough of the overpriced veterans on the Rangers roster. First, it was Jacob Trouba. Now it’s Chris Kreider, whom the latter finally signed off on the trade. Now that the deal is official, let’s have a quick chat about all the necessary fantasy hockey angles you need to know about.
Kreider, 34, had one of his worst fantasy seasons a year ago, posting 22 goals, but only eight total assists in 68 games. Those eight assists were his lowest single-season total since his rookie season back in 2012-13. Yeah… that long ago.
The thing about it is, I’m not sure Kreider is totally cooked yet. There is a very real possibility the Ducks get a way better version of Kreider heading into 2025-26. The former Rangers first round pick back in 2009 struggled with back, hand, and vertigo issues a season ago. All things that should be cleaned up heading into this season.
When you really think about it, given all the dysfunction in New York, it’s lowkey impressive he still hit the 20 goal mark all things considered.
The Ducks are going to get a big time shot in the arm for their powerplay unit. Old or not, Kreider is still a factor as a net front guy. He’s going to deflect and score his fair share of goals. This Ducks team is also improving big time and may not be done adding to this roster.
In terms of the Rangers, it’s really all about who will take the Kreider spot on the powerplay. We don’t know the answer to that yet, but it will be revealed eventually. Will it be Vincent Trocheck or Alexis Lafreniere? Whoever gets that job gets a boost in their fantasy value.
Bottom line with Kreider. He’s a useful piece in fantasy, but expectations have to be real. Not sure he’s going to rack up mega assist total, but his goal scoring probably will still be there. I like him at around the 150 overall player mark in your draft.
Full rankings this year for fantasy hockey are a go and will be unveiled after the offseason!
