We already handed out the trade grades. Now let’s talk about the fantasy hockey angle. Andrew Mangiapane is on the move. Does the trade to the Capitals help or hurt his fantasy stock?
Mangiapane, 28, clearly needed a change of scenery. The Flames are in total rebuild mode and we saw just last year that a guy like Noah Hanifin took off the second he went to a more functional team. Mangiapane has been a total zero in fantasy for most of his career outside of a 35 goal season back in 2021-222 that now looks like a total fluke.
The lines for Washington are pretty simple to figure out here. Alex Ovechkin is obviously the top line left winger. Mangiapane will slide in a top 6 role on the second line on that side. It’s hard to imagine him sitting in on the top PP unit unless he really pops off.
Last year, Mangiapane scored 14 goals. Even if he gets up to 25, he’s still pretty irrelevant fantasy wise. Washington isn’t a legitimate Cup contender either so it’s not like those bunny assists will be there. It would be a different story if Mangiapane landed with Colorado and was getting those easy points without doing much.
If you really think about it, was anybody useful in fantasy on this team last year minus Ovechkin and John Carlson? Why would that be any different this year? Maybe Dylan Strome takes a leap but that’s about the only dart throw you’re taking here.
For me, Mangiapane remains a waiver claim/daily streamer. We should stay in wait-and-see mode for now. Maybe Mangiapane pops off in a contract year but I wouldn’t be too optimistic about it.
