Fantasy Football: Vikings Acquire Jordan Mason

The Vikings have a new running back and his name is Jordan Mason. After a mini breakout season in San Francisco, Mason is on the move to Minnesota in exchange for dinky draft compensation. You don’t need me to tell you that we as fantasy football managers can only deal with the cards we’re dealt. Let’s just get right into the weeds on this one.

I think it’s best to start here. I’ve been trying to warn you this was coming for a long time. This is proof. The embed at the bottom if you want to read it is only further proof. I don’t know who needs to hear this but Jordan Mason is a good football player. He got carries over Jahmyr Gibbs at Georgia Tech. That wasn’t an accident.

Mason, 25, played in 12 games last year rushing for 789 rushing yards on 153 attempts (5.2 yards per carry). He’s been efficient his entire career averaging 5.2 YPC the season prior and 6.0 as a rookie.

This is the problem. The Vikings are led by Kevin O’Connell who is a former quarterback who wants to run the ball. Minnesota won 14 games year and were 14th in team rushing attempts. The year prior they were a middle of the road team and had the 5th least amount of rushing attempts in the league. If Minnesota isn’t a 14 win team again, do those rushing attempts come back down?

Also, I’d imagine Aaron Jones is going to be the starter. Follow the money. Jones was awesome last year and is going to be the lead back. He does the damn thing in the passing game too. We’re talking about a pure backup role for Mason. The positive is that Minnesota has literally four draft picks coming up and likely won’t burn one on a running back. This is going to be the rotation.

I think this is how you have to play this. Treat Mason like he’s a high end handcuff. If you have Jones make sure you also draft Mason. You can’t reach for Mason but if Jones does go down, he should have great success. Even if you don’t have Jones, Mason is a great get at the end of your draft.
