Fantasy Football: Patriots Sign Stefon Diggs

The Patriots finally have a real wide receiver on their team. Stefon Diggs is the new WR1 in New England, which creates quite the ripple effect in terms of fantasy football. I have about 200 more NFL Draft profiles to write so we’re not going to cheese the intro paragraph any longer than it needs to be.

Diggs, 31, is coming off a season where he tore his ACL and clearly was starting to show signs of decline during his final days in Buffalo. It’s certainly fair to question how much is left in the tank here, and it’s obvious the Patriots overpaid financially. The desperation on the price tag here reeks, but that doesn’t have anything to do with fantasy.

The good news is Drake Maye looks legit and did so with an egregious coaching staff. Now we get year two Maye with Mike Vrabel and Josh McDaniels. Based on Diggs being the only guy in the room with a pulse, there surely is some value here.

We don’t know how the draft will shake out, but there’s no real competition on the roster. Ja’Lynn Polk stinks (nobody wanted to listen), Javon Baker is a knucklehead (I tried to warn you), and now you insert offseason addition Mack Hollins, Kayshon Boutte, Pop Douglas, and Kendrick Bourne also exist. Either way, Diggs will be the featured receiver in this offense.

I don’t mind taking a shot on Diggs but be careful about reaching. The former Maryland product averaged 10.6 yards per catch in eight games with Houston last year and that’s prior to the ACL. It’s very possible New England is getting an even more diminished version. I like the flier as a late round pick or for a few bucks in your auction draft, but I’m not treating this like I’m getting a bonafide WR2 in fantasy. That would be a foolish approach.
