The Shohei Ohtani sweepstakes are winding down and somehow it appears that the Toronto Blue Jays are very much in the mix. Some may be confused about how the Blue Jays are even involved. Does Ohtani really want to play in Toronto? Do the Blue Jays actually think they’re getting Ohtani?
There is a clear and obvious reason why the Blue Jays are in on Ohtani despite the fact that everyone has a right to feel skeptical about it. However, the truth of the matter is that Ohtani can probably positively impact the Blue Jays more than any other franchise. It has everything to do with the ownership structure in Toronto.
Rogers Communications owns the Blue Jays. Their entire business model is communications. Landing Ohtani represents a chance to grow their entire business from a marketing perspective. To have a player that can pitch and hit in that market while being able to sell sponsorships, advertising, broadcasting, etc. The communications company with Ohtani can market in Asia and will only grow their business. That’s not including the obvious part where they will make money on jersey and ticket sales.
Ohtani means everything for the Blue Jays. If he’s on their team the entire value of the franchise multiplies significantly. Mostly because of the core business model that owns the team. This is the case more than any other team.
Signing Ohtani might mean increased resources to also re-sign Vlad Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette. Adding Ohtani might mean they have Steve Cohen resources to work with. It means everything for them.
