Diamondbacks Sign Eduardo Rodriguez To Lucrative Contract
The Diamondbacks have won the sweepstakes for Eduardo Rodriguez. This free agent window is packed with starting pitching and Arizona got their man. Mike Hazen, of course, was part of the front office in Boston when Rodriguez pitched there.
Mark Feinsand at MLB.com was the first to report the news on Rodriguez heading to the D-Backs.
“The D-backs have agreed to a four-year, $80 million contract with left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand.
The club has not confirmed the deal, which includes a vesting option for a fifth year that would bring the overall value to $99 million.”
The rotation in Arizona feels pretty set now. Rodriguez will slot behind Zac Gallen and Merrill Kelly. Brandon Pfaadt and Ryne Nelson will follow. For a team coming off a World Series appearance, this is a quality add to the rotation. We all know Eddie can pitch. It’s a matter of Eddie staying motivated. Time will tell if that happens. A year ago the guy went totally AWOL.
Rodriguez, 30, was really good last year and opted out of his contract to hit free agency. In 26 starts, the former Orioles farmhand posted a 3.30 ERA in 152 2/3 innings. The metrics were good too as he posted a 23% K rate and 7.7% walk rate.
There was thought to be a possible reunion in Boston but that never materialized. The Tigers will also not receive a comp pick for losing Rodriguez since Boston already got one for losing him the first time around.
