Third time’s a charm? Will the NHL actually return to Atlanta? It’s something that has been churning on the rumor mill. If the Thrashers were to return, one former player would be pretty happy about it. Evander Kane is 100% in support of the NHL returning to Atlanta.
“You talk about a great city to live in, a great city to be a part of,” Kane told Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. “The fan base. Everybody talks about a lack of fans, but the fanbase we had there was so awesome. They were so passionate about us as a hockey team. We had fans at practice all the time.”
“As an 18-year-old, I loved being there,” Kane said. “Great travel. Four other major sports. There’s lots to do. It’s a hub, you can get anywhere in the U.S. or even internationally from Atlanta. There’s so many good things I have to say about it. I would be 100% supportive.”
The basic history of hockey in Atlanta looks like this. The Georgia capital hosted the Flames from 1972-80 before relocating to Calgary. Then it was the Thrashers from 1999-2011. The Thrashers then became the Winnipeg Jets. If the NHL were to return, the Coyotes could either move there or the NHL could expand to 34 teams.
Kane, 32, was drafted fourth overall by the Thrashers in 2009. Kane is just one of three active players that played for the Thrashers. Blake Wheeler and Zach Bogosian are the other two.
