The New England Patriots’ de facto general manager explains the decision why the team took Tennessee quarterback Joe Milton in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft, despite drafting Drake Maye with the No. 3 overall pick, on ESPN’s The Adam Schefter Podcast.
Quote from Eliot Wolf via the podcast:
“It was just one of those picks where there was too much talent in him to pass that up,” Wolf said. “I had the opportunity to watch Joe play live, the last game of the year against Vanderbilt. I got there really early and watched him warm up. Just watching him throw the football is unbelievable.
“He’s 6-5, 245 pounds. He’s got a rocket for an arm. He’s athletic. He played in (Tennessee head coach Josh) Heupel’s offense there. It’s not an NFL offense, but we feel like there’s some things that we can work with and develop.”
Milton played six collegiate football seasons, three with the University of Michigan and three at Tennessee. During those six years, he threw for 5,353 passing yards and 37 touchdowns, while rushing for 299 yards and 12 rushing TDs; seven of those came in his last season with Tennessee.
The Patriots currently do not have a clear Week 1 starter, with the team also having Jacoby Brissett and Bailey Zappe on the roster.
Whether the decision to take Milton was by Wolf or another member of the Patriots coaching staff, things could heat up in training camp.
The New England Patriots were able to check some of the boxes during the NFL Draft, but still seem like an iffy team with questionable picks and heading into the season with first-year coach Jerod Mayo leading the team.
