The Red Sox need starting pitching in the worst way. Old friend Eduardo Rodriguez opted out of his contract today making him a free agent this offseason. Have you connected the dots yet? Does a reunion make sense for both sides?
Rodriguez, 30, made 25 starts in 2023 with Detroit posting a 3.40 ERA. The year prior, Rodriguez posted a 4.05 in 17 starts. Rodriguez has missed a lot of time and is going to want to top the three years at $49 million that he just opted out of. Is that something the Sox want to invest into?
To me, it really all depends on the price. Does three for $60 million get it done? As someone who watched a lot of Eduardo, you need to know what you’re signing up for. I’m not sure you want to give this guy a five year deal and just expect great results. Rodriguez needs to be motivated and on part of a winner. I’m not sure I’d be willing to go higher.
It’s not an accident he had his best year during an opt out season. Don’t forget a season ago the guy went totally AWOL. The positive is even if you missed out, you can sleep well at night knowing the comp pick the Red Sox got for Rodriguez the first time turned into Roman Anthony. If you don’t know who that is, Google him. It’s worth your time.
I think it’s a phone call you make but I don’t know how clear I can be about it. There’s a price the Sox should be in but it can’t be for significantly more than he just opted out for. It’s also a loaded free agent class for starting pitching that includes Blake Snell, Aaron Nola, Julio Urias, and Marcus Stroman. It’s even deeper than that in reality.
