Under Howie Roseman, the Eagles have never really spent top dollar for a running back. You can Google it if you would like and get back to me. Well, Saquon Barkley appears to be an exception to that rule. Something that isn’t overly surprising considering Barkley played at Penn State prior to being drafted by the Giants. The former Nittany Lions running back is signing with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news. The deal is a three year pact for $37.75 million. Incentives can push the deal up to $46.75 million. $26 million of the agreement will be guaranteed.
It turns out the Eagles didn’t take very long to replace D’Andre Swift. The Bears signed Swift earlier in the day in free agency. Barkley will now join Kenneth Gainwell in the Eagles backfield. Maybe Boston Scott and Rashaad Penny will return but both of those guys are also free agents.
For the Giants, Eric Gray is really the only notable name they have in the backfield. It’s safe to assume they will attempt to draft Barkley’s replacement with one of the backs available in this year’s class. I’m not sure how much this factor played a part in all of this but stealing Barkley away from the Giants probably was a nice cherry on top of all of this.
Philadelphia has been busy today in free agency. This isn’t the first big money contract they handed out today. The Eagles also added pass rusher Bryce Huff.
