E3 Has Been Cancelled

E3 is one of the largest and most reputable video game expositions in the world. Since 1995 the convention has hosted gaming’s biggest titles. From Halo to Final Fantasy to basically anything Valve has ever created. But in 2023 E3 won’t be showing off any new or impressive titles, this year the convention has been cancelled. This is the second year in a row the expo has been cancelled. But is this just a temporary setback or the beginning of the end for the convention?

Why Cancel?

According to reports by IGN, the event was cancelled because it, “simply did not garner the sustained interest necessary to execute it in a way that would showcase the size, strength, and impact of our industry,”. There just wasn’t enough interest in the event by game and tech companies. With Xbox, Nintendo, PlayStation, and later Ubisoft all refusing to attend. Instead, these companies and more have either decided not to do any kind of showcase, or host their own events.

There has been a growing trend for gaming companies to have their own events as opposed to heading off to E3. With some having already hosted their own conventions for years by this point. Blizzard’s Blizzcon, Mojang’s Minecon for Minecraft. Even Paradox has PDXCON for its 4X strategy games and other content.

This mass exodus from E3 was not helped by the COVID-19 pandemic. Which accelerated the departures from the event. But even as the pandemic has passed, the companies and groups haven’t returned. Continuing the cycle of losses for the event.

Is There a Future For E3?

The way things are going for the expo there might not be much of a future left for E3. The loss of both Xbox and PlayStation is huge and might not be recoverable. While nothing is set in stone if things don’t reverse for E3 soon the event will either have to downsize or shut its doors permanently.
