Dustin May is an imposing figure. Standing at 6-foot-6 and with his carrot-top red hair, he glares down at any batter he faces. On top of it, he hurtles his fastball at dizzying speeds which makes it difficult for most to catch up. On arguably the best team in baseball, May could possibly be the Dodgers’ best pitcher.
The righthander’s sample size isn’t much. May broke into the majors with the Dodgers in 2019 but almost immediately made an impact as a starter. In 2020, he received Rookie of the Year votes after posting a 2.57 ERA with 44 strikeouts as well as a 1.089 WHIP.
The hopes were high for 2021 as one of LA’s elite starters along with Julio Urias, Walker Buehler, Trevor Bauer, and Clayton Kershaw. In five starts, the righthander had a 2.74 ERA with an amazing FIP of 0.957 with a K/9 of 13.7. Then disaster struck.
On May 1, 2021, May tore his UCL, requiring season-ending Tommy John surgery. He knew the road to recovery would be long but before he knew it, he was back throwing the baseball in August of 2022 after nearly 15-and-a-half months out.
His return to the Dodgers was highly anticipated. On Aug. 20, Dustin pitched five innings, striking out NINE and only allowing one hit. He was understandably on a short leash. Regardless, this is huge for Los Angeles.
What makes May so good? It may perhaps be his 99 MPH sinker. Not only does it consistently miss bats, but it also ensures weak contact. He also throws a curveball pretty consistently too which could be considered his strikeout pitch.
The team recently lost Walker Buehler to Tommy John Surgery which will sideline him for this season and possibly all of next season. Dustin May and Clayton Kershaw being healthy will be beneficial for the Dodgers to ensure a deep playoff push once again.
