Don’t Eat The Cheese: 2020 Fantasy Football Tight End Busts

Tight End Busts
Don’t Eat The Cheese is back! Starting off with the tight end teaser. Who are the fantasy tight end busts? What exactly has Tyler Higbee done to earn a high fantasy ranking? (Jeff Lewis/LA Times)

Don’t Eat The Cheese: 2020 Fantasy Football Tight End Busts

It’s time to jump into the don’t eat the cheese fantasy series. This was the first ever column I ever wrote. It’s been a wild success ever since. Sometimes it’s more important who you don’t pick instead who you do. We will start you off with a tease piece on the tight ends. The good ones will come out later. Here we go. Don’t eat the cheese! 2020 fantasy football tight end busts coming in hot.

Tyler Higbee (Rams)

Somebody has to help me out with this one. In what world is Tyler Higbee useful in fantasy? The former Western Kentucky product has been in the NFL for 4 years. He has 7 touchdowns. What are we doing here? I’ve seen some big rankings for Higbee. I don’t get it.

We have a formula here. The top 3 wide receivers are fantasy relevant in this Rams offense. Yes, Brandin Cooks is gone but those targets are going to Van Jefferson or Josh Reynolds. It’s not like Higbee is going to cash in on a 900 yard season or something.

Furthermore, Higbee is in a full blown committee. Sean McVay has already come out and said he wants Gerald Everett more involved. Let’s not forget, Everett was drafted higher. Not saying that means anything but he’s still very much a piece of the offense. LA also drafted another tight end Brycen Hopkins.

The Tyler Higbee hype is laughable. His quarterback is Jared Goff, not Patrick Mahomes. It’s not like there’s 50 touchdowns up for grabs. There is probably 22 up for grabs. Dead fish alert.

Austin Hooper (Browns)

Just because the Browns were dumb enough to hand Austin Hooper a record contract, doesn’t translate to fantasy success. I’m not even sure he’s the best tight end on the roster. I actually think David Njoku is more talented. Either way, both are very involved.

Let’s use some common sense here. Kevin Stefanski is coming over from Minnesota. He showed you the formula. Kyle Rudolph and Irv Smith were both involved. Neither did enough to carve out a big fantasy role. I’m supposed to believe it’s going to be any different with Hooper and Njoku?

We’re also talking about a coach who is going to run the football more. Stefanski was run heavy with Dalvin Cook. Now I’m supposed to believe that’s different with Nick Chubb? Stop it.

Baker Mayfield won’t be in the shoot outs Matt Ryan has been. Cleveland has a much better defense. This is going to be Minnesota style. You already know Jarvis Landry and Odell Beckham bitch about targets as it is.

Show me where Austin Hooper is getting 97 targets like he did a year ago? Last year, Kyle Rudolph got 48 targets and Irv Smith for 47. That’s around the number Hooper is getting. He’s not a valuable fantasy commodity, at least in Cleveland.

Hayden Hurst (Falcons)

This one is more of a can’t play thing. If you think Hayden Hurst is the next Austin Hooper, you haven’t actually watched football. Hurst can’t play. Not even a little. He’s a 26 year old baseball flame out that never deserved to be a first round pick. Hurst got beaten out for the 2nd tight end spot in Baltimore by Nick Boyle who never caught a touchdown pass prior to the 2019 season. Hurst won’t come close to the numbers Hooper put up last year.

TJ Hockenson (Lions)

TJ Hockenson was the former 8th pick in the NFL Draft. The tight end job was his. No competition or target share in the way. 12 games, 32 receptions, 367 yards, and 2 touchdowns. In an offense that was constantly trailing and throwing basically all the time. This is your king?

The truth of the matter is, Hockenson isn’t that good, just like I said he wouldn’t be anything special. I’ll put that stamp on it again. In fact, here’s the crazy part. The former Iowa product actually had a good Week 1. Call it a blind squirel finding a nut. 6 receptions for 131 yards and a touchdown. Imagine what the rest of his season looks like without that game? He’s just not good.
