Does College Football Need A Compensatory Formula For The Transfer Portal?

College football is more like the NFL than ever before. Players are paid. Players pay taxes on said income. Players can leave and change teams without much. The transfer portal and NIL has really changed the game… which is exactly why more of these pro rule parameters need to start entering the sport.

The transfer portal is really the wild, wild west. There are no rules. There are no guidelines. Hell, the calendar itself is a trainwreck! There are a lot of rules that need to be implemented but how about we start with one that makes too much sense not to put into action?

It’s time for the compensatory formula to be added.

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. If the sport wants to move in the right direction, they will add more rules from European soccer. Relegation is a must. Beyond that, basically every single sports league out there has a compensatory system.

MLB has the qualifying offer. The NFL has a compensatory system to where if players depart in free agency, the system gives them draft picks back. Soccer has the transfer fee system, which is exactly what college football needs.

Explain this part to me. Why should all these small school teams get their rosters raided without getting any compensation in return? To me, that’s so BS. If big schools want to steal players in the portal, they should be required to pay a tax in order to do it.

Here’s a perfect example.

Darian Mensah leaves Tulane for Duke after the Blue Devils offered him an insane offer in NIL money. Tulane is left empty handed. Shouldn’t Tulane be rewarded for finding/developing the player? Shouldn’t Duke be required to give Tulane a posting fee for stealing their quarterback?

If we want to pretend these small school teams have a fighting chance in this fairytale playoff, doesn’t it make sense to add rules in place so they actually have a real chance? What would happen is the teams that are smart would be able to use the transfer fee funds to backfill their roster. Whatever the equivalent of teams like Ajax would start to emerge and the little guys who start to be functional real programs if they scout properly.

It makes way too much sense not to happen. Teams would maybe think twice about how they spend their money. All I know is the small schools who lose players for nothing in the portal, something needs to be done about it. Adding a transfer fee rule would be a perfect way to level off some of this chaos. Guess what? It probably would pave the way for Spring games to return again too…
