Did The Celtics Draft Spanish Jordan Walsh With Hugo Gonzalez?

I don’t know who needs to hear this, but Brad Stevens sucks at his job. We’re now five years into the Stevens era, and he doesn’t have one draft pick who is a hit, and it’s not arguable. He also doesn’t have a defining piece that he’s acquired on the roster. Anyone who’s intelligent understands that Danny Ainge built the championship team in Boston. People should probably be far more nervous than they are regarding new draft pick Hugo Gonzalez.

Are we sure the Celtics didn’t just draft Spanish Jordan Walsh?

Are we sure Stevens should just be given the benefit of the doubt at this point?

“He’s a young guy, but a little bit of an old soul,” Stevens said. “He’s played with adults for a long time. He’s playing on a team full of experienced former NBA players and high, high-level pros all from all over the world. So this guy has been around it at a high level, been coached really well. I think when you talk about years overall, yes, he’s young, but years of basketball experience, the things that we will think are important.”

I don’t want to call Stevens a liar… but he’s a liar. To say that Gonzalez has years of basketball experience is quite the quote. For Real Madrid this past year, he averaged 10.7 minutes per game. To say a guy who averaged barely 10 minutes per game has all this experience is laughable.

I’m not going to pretend I’ve watched extensive Gonzalez tape, but the Vendetta basketball team was not fond of this pick. Hanifan didn’t rank Gonzalez inside his top 30 on his draft board, and said right now he’s basically just a defensive sub. Karl is the one who made the Spanish Jordan Walsh comp. He can play defense, but he’s nowhere near ready to actually contribute.

It’s hard not to be skeptical of this pick. Not because he’s an international player, but because Rasheer Fleming was staring them in the face, and they passed for a project.

So feel free to track this. Over the next five years or so, I’ll take Fleming > Gonzalez. We’ll see who’s right. All I know is someone has to be honest about what’s going on here…
