Antonio Pierce is officially the head coach of the Raiders. I just want to make sure we’re on the same page here. Are we sure the Raiders did the right thing here? Are we positive about that?
Maxx Crosby can say anything he wants about who he wants to run the team. I very much believe the idea that Pierce is a leader of men. Let’s just also put respect where it’s earned. Patrick Graham is what got Pierce this job. The guy calls a hell of a game as a defensive coordinator. The Raiders were 9th in points allowed and 15th in yards allowed with a mediocre roster and an offense that couldn’t move the ball with Aidan O’Connell. Graham’s defense held this team together allowing the Raiders to go 5-4 down the stretch. If Graham isn’t the defensive coordinator, do you still like Pierce’s chances?
More than anything, it felt like the Raiders had to make this move for continuity purposes. It feels like they’re paying the price of not hiring Rich Bisaccia after his iteration of the Raiders got hot after taking over for Jon Gruden. Had Vegas kept Bisaccia and it not panned out long term, do they still keep Pierce this time around? Food for thought.
I understand why the Raiders did this. Regardless of who got the job, this team needs to find a quarterback. That issue has to be solved or none of this really matters. I’m just not going to pretend and sit here acting like the Raiders nailed this. Pierce may very well turn into a head coach. In the range of outcomes that exist, it’s just hard to believe this team isn’t better off long-term with Jim Harbaugh. He’s the home run hire in the cycle and begging him to implement his culture with the Raiders should have been viewed as the premium option.
