Did Carson Beck Make The Right Call Transferring To Miami?

Did Carson Beck Make The Right Call Transferring To Miami?

It turns out Carson Beck literally pulled a Cam Ward. One day he’s in the NFL Draft, the next he’s in the portal. I hinted at just that in the original article when Beck first entered the transfer portal. One day later, the former Georgia quarterback announced his intentions to play for Miami in 2025.

This is the real question. Did Beck really make the right call here? Are we sure this was a smart decision to play for the Hurricanes?

Let’s set the stage on some of this stuff because there are some obvious things that need to be said:

I’m quite sure Miami offered Beck a boatload of cash. Probably more than what he would have made next year on his rookie contract. The hometown factor probably played a role too. Beck is from Jacksonville, Florida, and gets to be closer to home now. I get all of those things and am not arguing either of those angles.

Replacing Cam Ward and simply filling those shoes feels like an impossible ask. Not that Beck can’t do it but he’s going to be expected to put up those type of numbers. May I remind you that Ward is coming off a season where he was a finalist for the Heisman and threw for 4,313 yards, 39 touchdowns, and seven picks. Add in over 200 yards and four scores with his legs too.

May I also remind you that meathead Mario Cristobal is still the coach? What Ward did last year was unbelievable. Justin Herbert has established himself as an NFL franchise quarterback and he didn’t come close to putting up those type of numbers under Cristobal.

Oh, and he won’t have Xavier Restrepo, Jacolby George, and Sam Brown to throw the ball to either. All of those guys graduated and Isaiah Horton left for Alabama. Stud tight end Elijah Arroyo declared for the draft. No Damien Martinez in the backfield either. It’s going to be an entirely different cast of characters he has to throw the ball to and they won’t be nearly as good or reliable as what Miami had this past year.

Oh, and the defense is tragic. Maybe this will change for the positive after staff changes but last year, Miami gave up 25.3 points per game and over 327 yards per game. That’s with having the most explosive offense in the country. Imagine what happens to the defense if this offense takes a step back and controls the clock less?

For Miami, this is a no-brainer. They didn’t have an established quarterback on the roster with Cam Ward leaving for the NFL. Beck is an enormous upgrade over Emory Williams. Beck has real NFL potential and is a huge get for the Canes. I’m just not sure it’s a smart move for Beck. Expecting him to replicate everything Ward did on the field and even off the field as a leader is a really tough ask. Going from Kirby Smart to meathead Mario could be a rude awakening.
