Either you read the title to this article and sensed the sarcasm right away, or you are delusional. This article would go completely different in Robert Sarver sold the team and allowed Phoenix to get some help.
In four seasons, Devin Booker has shined. Shined show bright that no one could even give him recognition because of how awful his teams are. It isn’t going to change anytime soon. The argument most recently used for Booker to become an MVP was used in a scenario where the Suns improve to 35-47 this season and then somehow jump another 20 games and go 55-27 the following year. I’m not sure how they are supposed to win 35 games this year when they have progressively gotten worse over the last 3 seasons.
The great thing about Phoenix is they will ride and die with every player this city loves. Remember Steve Nash?
I’ll give it to Phoenix, they have a decent potential starting lineup this year. They lack a bench. If you’re sold that a bench consisting of Frank Kaminsky, Tyler Johnson, and Aron Baynes can do damage….well you’re wrong but nice opinion. Oubre has never been a consistent starter and starting 20 games this year would be a record for him. Rubio is coming off an injury-riddled season and some of his worst shooting numbers.
Adam Maynes, writer for Valley of the Suns stated in an article of his about Booker “…Booker has scored over 3,100 more points by the age of 23 than Michael Jordan.” For those that don’t understand by age 23, Jordan had played one full season (rookie year) and spent his second year injured after breaking his leg. Booker by age 23 has played in 272 career games. 172 more games total than Jordan played in before age 23. To draw more light to this stat, over those 172 games that Jordan did not play in, he would only need to average 18.02 a game to hit that 3,100 mark. Jordan averaged 37.1 his third season…Booker is not the same scorer Jordan was.
“He once scored 70 in a game.” A game in which the Suns lost by 10 and spent the majority down by 20. In recent memory, there has not been a player of his caliber to have such empty stats. Twice last season Booker hit over 50+. Phoenix lost both those games. Booker has potential in this league, it won’t happen in Phoenix though.
An argument so often used in favor of Devin Booker is that he averaged 26+ per game, a stat that some seem to believe does not happen often. Well, it has happened over 250 times. With their team winning 19 games or less? Not a lot.
Watching Devin Booker is like watching Chad Ochocinco highlights on repeat. You love to see how well they do, but you can’t help and feel bad for the crapshoot that is around them.
Top-10 maybe even Top-5 SG in the NBA will continue to be left off All-NBA Team’s until he is out.
Best Case Scenario for Booker:
He requests a trade after they win less than 30 games again this year. Go be the second option on a team and excel to be the great scorer that he is.
