The smart people in fantasy football have fully embraced the zero RB strategy. It’s here to stay and finding those late round running backs in dynasty is what wins leagues. With that said, should you consider taking a flier on Cowboys running back Deuce Vaughn in dynasty or keeper style fantasy football leagues?
The former Kansas State product flashed a bit in the preseason showing his elusiveness. We know the skillset by now (link to draft profile). Short, quick, can catch.
I’m just not sure how any of it translates to fantasy. What’s really the best case scenario here? Maybe Vaughn can be the next Darren Sproles. Maybe he can be the more talented version of Boston Scott. If that tickles your fancy, knock yourself out.
The best thing Vaughn has going for him is the lack of running back depth in Dallas. Vaughn could very easily carve out that Sproles role and be used in passing situations with the occasional rushing attempt. We’re still talking about a guy that’s 5-foot-5. We’re never going to get to the point where he’s the workhorse back getting a serious amount of volume.
With any of these type of players, you never know when to start them. We always advocate best ball leagues here, but this is the type of guy that loses value in leagues where you have to set a lineup. I just have a hard time imaging a world where you notch Vaughn in as an every day starter in fantasy. Seems way more likely that he has a week or two where he has that home run ball that you will never know when it’s actually coming.
Deuce Vaughn is a pass for me even in long term fantasy leagues. I’m much lower than consensus on Vaughn even coming out of college. For fantasy, I just fail to see a world where he ever turns into a true starting running back that you’re leaning on 20+ times a game. There are just better rookie running backs to take a shot on that have a chance to eventually get that role.
