Detroit Lions Trade For Carlton Davis

The Detroit Lions have agreed to a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to land cornerback Carlton Davis, according to NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter reported the specific details of the trade. The Lions will receive Davis, a 2024 sixth-round pick and 2025 sixth-round pick in exchange for the Lions’ 2024 third-round pick.

The Lions still own a third-round pick in the upcoming draft. Detroit owns the Viking third-round selection. That pick was acquired in the T.J. Hockenson deal.

Davis is in the final year of his deal and is set to be paid $14,745,000.

The Lions struggled on the boundaries in 2023. The team had a lack of depth and top-tier talent on the outside. That could be seen in the playoffs as starting corners Cameron Sutton and Kindle Vildor were often attacked.

Davis is a great addition to provide quality play from an outside corner. At six-foot-one, he has proven to be a starting-caliber outside corner.

The Lions should be better at cornerback in 2024. Detroit will feature Davis, Sutton, and Emmanuel Moseley on the outside. Additionally, Brian Branch is a sensational slot corner. It would not be a shock to see Detroit build upon that group before the offseason concludes.

The addition of Davis will help the Lions attack the 2024 NFL Draft with a best player available mindset. Otherwise, cornerback would have been a serious need. Now, the Lions draft board can open up to players who are not cornerbacks.

The next move for Detroit will be to determine if they want to extend the 27-year-old corner.
