Deshaun Watson wanted Cleveland. The Browns will take anyone. They’re always desperate. Somehow those two things came together in the end when the door seemed closed. After already denying them, Watson changed his mind and has agreed to join the Cleveland Browns.
Ian Rapoport of NFL Network was the first to report the news:
Watson, 27, will also sign a record breaking extension as part of this trade. Watson gets a new contract as part of the deal with the Browns. 5-year, $230 million extension gets lumped in. Oh, and it’s fully guaranteed. That’s probably what got the deal done for the Browns. Watson gets the bag and it’s a fully guaranteed bag. It’s a baseball contract which was good enough for Watson.
Carolina, New Orleans, and Atlanta end up as runners up in the process. Watson is from the state of Georgia and went to college at Clemson. Being in the south closer to family may have been the preferred option. At the end of the day, neither have a better roster than the Browns. The Eagles also had interest but Watson turned them down a long time ago.
Credit to Andrew Berry for saving the day here. Yesterday, it looked like they botched the Baker Mayfield thing. Now they get Deshaun Watson. Some would argue it’s the biggest win in the history of the Browns organization.
The trade is done. The package will include three first round picks. Cleveland will also include a couple of mid round picks including a third and 5th rounder. Watson is officially a member of the Browns.
