Derek Stingley is already making waves. But should we be surprised? The No. 3 pick in this year’s draft is living up to the bill. That much is certain. But Trey Daubert could have told you that months ago.
In a Texans defense that needs all the help it can get, the former LSU standout has stepped in and delivered. He has defended three passes and even recorded a sack through his first three NFL games. What’s even more astounding is his athletic ability. Along with zero receptions allowed against the Chicago Bears, he also recorded this mesmerizing play:
You can’t teach that. However, some predicted this. Who, you ask? Look no further than Trey Daubert. He even went as far as saying that Stingley is the best player in the 2022 draft. In a few years’ time, the information we have now could translate into a perennial All-Pro corner. Of course, the injury issues were there. Getting foot surgery and sitting out a majority of the year will certainly scare away teams.
But facts are facts. Stingley was one of college football’s best players when he was on the field. Despite being 0-2-1 on the season, the Houston Texans finally have a cornerstone player on defense to truly start a rebuild with. If they can figure out whether Davis Mills is actually worth building around, then they could start surprising people.
I, for one, have seen enough. Trey Daubert is simply ahead of the curve. How could you argue otherwise? Even when swimming through accusations that his injury would set him back, Trey still had him as the best cornerback in the draft. Based on that, I would have assumed that he would be seen as one of the best rookies in 2022.
But still, the radio silence must continue. Why is that? I don’t get it. The world seems to be punishing Trey for simply getting more things right than anyone else. Everyone could be more like him. By working hard, paying close attention to the things that matter, and not shying away from the grind. Derek Stingley is gonna be an elite NFL player but this is no news to Trey. People need to start waking up soon. Or else it’s not gonna be fun for them.
