Denver Broncos Release Randy Gregory

The Denver Broncos have released linebacker Randy Gregory in an effort to focus on the younger talent that they have, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported Wednesday.

The production just hasn’t been there for Gregory, who signed a five-year, $70 million contract with Denver after becoming a free agent in 2022.

Gregory has registered just one sack, nine tackles, two tackles plus a pair of quarterback hits in four games this season. Unfortunately, the Broncos overpaid for a player who hasn’t really done much in the NFL throughout his career.

Gregory recorded just 19.5 sacks in five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. With Denver, he has only put up three sacks in two seasons. Gregory played in just 10 of a possible 21 games during his time in Denver, as a knee injury limited him to six games last season after he missed all of training camp due to shoulder surgery.

Last Sunday, head coach Sean Payton benched Gregory for Nik Bonitto who had a monster game. Bonitto recorded 2.5 sacks, two tackles for loss, two QB hits and a forced fumble in the Broncos’ first win of the season against the Chicago Bears.

In terms of money, Gregory had a guaranteed $14 million base salary for 2023 and a cap hit of $16.1 million. So, according to Over the Cap, Denver is expected to bear the full cost of Gregory’s $16.1 million expense for this year. Along with that, the $6.3 million bonus will be recorded as a dead charge on its 2024 cap.

With Gregory gone, Bonitto and Jonathon Cooper are likely to continue starting. Veteran Frank Clark, who has been out with a hip injury, and Baron Browning (knee injury) could be back in the rotation soon.
