Deion Sanders: Colorado is open to playing another team for spring game

There aren’t any college football games going on right now, but Spring football for most Division-I teams is in full fledge.

While more and more are being canceled around the country because of how rampant the transfer portal window(s) are, spring games–scheduled in early-to-mid April for most programs–gives evaluators the first look at myriad players and teams three-plus months ahead of the season.

Colorado head coach Deion Sanders wants to make spring games a little more interesting, however.

After announcing his team’s spring game would be on April 19 earlier this week, Sanders campaigned for the NCAA to allow the Buffaloes to play another team during their spring game–similar to how the NFL allows teams to have joint practices in the preseason.

“I would actually like to play the spring game against another team, in the spring. That’s what I’m trying to do right now,” Sanders said earlier this week. “I would like to style it like the pros. I’d like to go against someone [in practice] for a few days, and then you have the spring game. I think the public would be satisfied with that tremendously.

“I think it’s a tremendous idea. I’ve told those personnel, who should understand that, that it’s a tremendous idea.”

Why College Football Teams Are Starting To Cancel Their Spring Game

Shortly after his plea, Syracuse head coach Fran Brown said his team would be willing to play Colorado in Boulder, Colo.

Football junkies (i.e. Trey, Garrett, Chickster, etc.) are feens for any type of football during the spring, so watching two teams from around the country play against each other would be great entertainment. For coaches and evaluators, it’s a great barometer to see where teams are at against other competition heading into the summer as well.

Colorado defensive line coach and Hall of Famer Warren Sapp loved the idea of watching his players “whoop” against another team’s.

“You just made my mouth water,” Sapp said. “I get another (jersey) color that my boys can just go to work and whoop on ’em and we don’t care? Please bring them in here. Who’s coming? Who wants some of this?”

The NCAA appears to be moving in another direction with spring football so I’m not sure how practical Sanders’ idea is, which is sad. Once the NCAA amends the transfer portal policy (which is out of control) with more regulation, we may see an uptick again. Nevertheless, it’s still a cool out-of-the-box idea for Sanders, who also knew the benefits of playing against other teams in the preseason in the NFL.
