Debbie McWilliams explains why the new James Bond “cannot be in his 20s”

As one of the most iconic fictional characters of all time, James Bond has gone on to be one of the longest and most successful movie franchises as well. But with actor Daniel Craig hanging up the gadgets and guns, it’s time to find a new Bond actor. But according to casting director Debbie McWilliams, that actor cannot be too young, and cannot be in his 20s.

To McWilliams, why an actor can’t be Bond while in their 20s simply comes down to a lack of experience. In an interview with RadioTimes McWilliams explains how this line of thinking affected the choosing of Bond back in 2006.

“We did look at a lot of younger actors, and I just don’t think they had the gravitas,” she said. “They didn’t have the experience, they didn’t have the mental capacity to take it on, because it’s not just the part they’re taking on. It’s a massive responsibility.

“So we kind of scrubbed that idea and went back to the drawing board and started again.”

Who Will Become the Next 007?

Some of the other actors in consideration back in 2006 included now well-known stars like Henry Cavill. But Craig ultimately clinched the role due to being 38-years-old at the time. Now, with him out, scores of actors 30 and older are either lining up or are speculated to try out for the role — Idris Elba to Sam Heughan to Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Despite the list of potential actors, there has yet to be a selection for a new James Bond. With Elba having announced he won’t be playing Bond, it’s still up in the air as to just who will be taking on the next mission, and just who will meet the age requirement.
