Report: Salt Lake City looking to add MLB Team

Big League Utah coalition, a group based out of Salt Lake City, Utah, is looking to add a Major League Baseball team in the future, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The group is led by former Utah Jazz owner Gail Miller. Miller’s group joins Music City Baseball (Nashville, Tenn.) and the Portland Diamond Project (Portland, Ore.) as the two organizations attempting to expand Major League Baseball.

Charlotte has also been rumored to want a team. Even if a city like Nashville doesn’t get a new team, they could potentially be suitors to the Tampa Bay Rays, who have been considering a move amongst stadium disputes.

Salt Lake City could be a perfect suitor for a new team. They have a strong economic presence, have a larger market than several MLB cities, are in the midst of a population boom, and already host an NBA team in the Utah Jazz.

MLB has made it clear that they would be open to expanding as well.

“I would love to get to 32 teams.” MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said in June of 2022, in reference to a possible expansion.

Salt Lake City and others join Las Vegas as the conglomerate of cities that desire new Major League clubs in the future. The most highly rumored city to be acquiring a team has to be Vegas, which seemingly has been waiting patiently for the Oakland Athletics to announce a move.

Miller discussed how important the game is to her and the city. She is committed to getting a new team in Utah, even discussing stadium locations and the success of the Salt Lake Bees, the Triple-A affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels.

Miller is a part of the Larry H. Miller Company, a company that her late husband founded. An MLB team in Salt Lake City was a goal for the couple for decades.

“The game was a big part of our life, our whole life,” Miller said. “He would be very pleased about getting a major league team here today.”
