Dback’s Zac Gallen Could Be The Next Greg Maddux

The Arizona Diamondbacks have a precious gift that could as well be made of gold. Right-handed pitcher Zac Gallen is making strides comparable to the greatness of the past at only 25 years old. Former pitcher and Dodger announcer Orel Hershiser directly compared Gallen to Hall of Famer Greg Maddux.

Although he hasn’t played a full season, Gallen has posted a 2.78 earned run average in 152 career innings pitched so far amongst both the Marlins and the Diamondbacks. In the pandemic shortened season of last year, Gallen finished ninth in Cy Young Voting with a 2.75 earned run average in 72 innings pitched, becoming the ace of the Dbacks rotation.

Hershiser’s comparison to Maddux stemmed during a game in which Gallen was shutting down the Los Angeles Dodgers last September. The Dodgers could absolutely not figure out the righty and was impressing everyone, including Bulldog.

“nothing overwhelming, but fantastic edgy pitching” -Orel Hershiser

What Gallen does differently is he’s able to command the outer parts of the zone efficiently. He paints the corners and never leaves anything middle or middle in. Gallen does this by throwing the changeup, fastball, curveball, and cutter. He lives on the edge and does it quite well. Greg Maddux also fits this category of the pitcher who could surgically curate a game and control it to the best of his ability.

What’s next for the young pitcher is to see how he can use these tools throughout the entirety of the season. Although he plays for a mediocre Diamondbacks team, he is expected to be their ace. If Gallen stays healthy he could be a highly impactful player. I project him to have a sub 3 ERA, 15+ wins, and 200+ strikeouts. He could quietly be the most underrated pitcher in all of baseball.
