Daryl Morey, GM of the Houston Rockets, found himself in the media today upon sending out a controversial tweet in regards to the China and Hong Kong dispute.
For those that do not understand, Hong Kong is part of China but has its own political and economic systems until 2047. Hong Kong was, formerly a colony to the United Kingdom was transferred over to China in 1997 after 156 years of British rule.
Daryl Morey’s tweet earlier today said “Fight for Freedom. Stand with Hong Kong.”
It seems that Morey himself is taking matters into his own hands by being the democratic peacemaker between the Rockets and Hong Kong. Before the transfer in 1997, about half a million people left Hong Kong. If capable it is assumed that more will attempt to migrate before Hong Kong goes under complete China rule in 2047.
Shortly after Morey sent out his tweet, the Chinese government, CBA (Chinese Basketball Association), and Chinese businesses denounced Daryl Morey and started working to sever ties with the Houston Rockets.
As time carries on, I highly doubt the Rockets will have their ties severed with China due to the impact of Yao Ming. Negotiations, deals, partnerships will most likely be suspended for a little bit of time but expect things to mellow out.
Morey won’t lose his job over this, despite various reports saying they will consider it.
