Darren Waller Will Set Single-Season TE Receiving Yards Record

The NFL will be adopting a 17-game season beginning in 2021. That means more football, and more football means bigger numbers, and bigger numbers mean broken records. I predict Las Vegas Raiders tight end Darren Waller will break the single-season tight end receiving yards record this season.

The current single-season record for receiving yards by a tight end belongs to Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs. Kelce posted a 1,416-yard season in 2020. He did so in 15 games and averaged 94.4 yards per game. Breaking this record over a 17-game season requires an average of 83.4 yards per game, assuming the tight end in question plays in every game.

Who Is Taking Targets from Darren Waller?

First, I’ll say that I think there are only three tight ends who are even capable of breaking this record: Waller, Kelce, and George Kittle of the San Francisco 49ers. Darren Waller is in the best situation to do it out of these three. Kelce is competing for targets with Tyreek Hill. Kittle has Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk on his team. Who on the Las Vegas Raiders is taking targets from Darren Waller? Henry Ruggs III? Hunter Renfrow? No shot. Waller is effectively the WR1 in an offense that will be pushing the ball downfield a lot. 83.4 yards per game is definitely attainable. Waller averaged 74.8 receiving yards per game in 2020.

Kelce and Kittle could certainly break this record given that they will each feature prominently in their respective offenses, but Vegas’ lack of a reliable WR1 makes this a great situation for Waller to rack up the yards necessary to break the record (and keep those fantasy owners happy).
