Shane “Hurricane” Burgos (15-3) announced on The MMA Hour on Monday that he is signing an exclusive contract with PFL over UFC and Dana White. After Burgos had his arm raised against Charles Jourdain in a well-fought, hard-earned victory at UFC Long Island, the 31-year-old fighter later said, “that was the last fight of my deal.”
“I said after the fight that I wanted to test free agency, test the waters,” Burgos said. “I know what I am worth, I wanted to see what everyone else thought I was worth. So, I went out there, I tested the free agency market, and I’m excited to announce that I’m signing with the PFL.”
Dana White admitted in an interview with Yahoo! Sports on Tuesday that he made a mistake in letting Burgos walk.
“Basically, there were some mistakes that were made here, some s*** that … he should’ve still been here,” White said. “I respect him very much and I wish him the best. A hundred percent [mistakes were made on the UFC side]. A hundred percent. Big mistakes were made over here.”
Even though Burgos parts ways with UFC, there is mutual respect between he and White. During the aforementioned interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Burgos asserted his appreciation for the UFC. “All the guys at the UFC, I can’t thank you guys enough,” Burgos said. He also mentioned how UFC gave him the platform he needed and that joining the organization was something he knew he wanted to do as a youngin’.
The monetary contractual differences between the two organizations seemed to be the deciding factor and helped Burgos make his decision to choose PFL over the UFC contract. He stated it would take multiple UFC fights to match one PFL bout.
