After a long-awaited free agency, running back Dalvin Cook and the New York Jets have come to an agreement. Cook has signed a one-year deal worth up to $8.6 million in the Big Apple, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter first reported Monday.
The free agency process is over. Dalvin Cook is finally a New York Jet.
Although Cook had many admirers for his talents, he ended up in New York. Alec Ingold, a fullback for the Miami Dolphins, wanted his squad to sign the 28-year-old back to a deal before he joined the Jets.
“Man, we’ve got a plethora of backs right now,” Ingold said on SiriusXM NFL Radio in early July. “Especially with our [third]-round pick Devon [Achane], Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson, Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed — we’ve got some dogs here. So having Dalvin Cook in the mix, that competition breeds excellence, man. You want as [many] good, quality backs as you can possibly have — especially in our offense when guys can really make something happen with it.
“You can touch it a million different ways. You’ve got out of the backfield, you’ve got in the backfield, outside zone, inside zone, we’re going to run some routes. So, it’s, man — more backs. Give me all the backs. Can we have 15 running backs in the training camp room? I would love it.”
Cook has been regarded as one of the NFL’s top running backs ever since he entered the league. After being selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the No. 41 pick in the 2017 NFL draft, Cook hasn’t looked back since.
Rushing for almost 6,000 yards in just six seasons, Cook is an animal. When the 28-year-old is on the field, he can be a big asset. Across his six-year career, the former Seminole has averaged almost five yards a carry on around 1,300 carries, amassing 47 touchdowns and 5,993 yards in just 73 games.
Cook will be joining Michael Carter and talented second-year back Breece Hall in the Jets’ backfield, as they now have an even more packed running back room. Packed, but very good.
In signing Cook, the Jets become not only contenders to win the AFC East, but to win the entire AFC. It may be packed, but with the offseason they had, there could be no stopping the Jets.
