Dalvin Cook signs with Cowboys

Veteran running back Dalvin Cook has signed a deal with the Dallas Cowboys, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter was among the first to report Wednesday.

According to Cowboys beat writer Todd Archer, Cook will begin on the team’s practice squad and will play Week 1 “if needed.”

Cook, who turned 29-years-old on Aug. 10, recently played 15 games with the New York Jets before signing with Baltimore ahead of the playoffs. He tallied 214 yards on 3.2 yards per carry with New York before posting 23 rushing yards on eight attempts in Baltimore’s loss to Kansas City in the Divisional round.

He now joins a semi-crowded backfield with veteran tailback Ezekiel Elliott and Rico Dowdle.

Whether he makes the roster or not, I don’t believe Cook will eat into too many of their carries anyway. Elliott’s a better short-yardage back while Dowdle is more explosive and agile in the open field at this stage of their careers.

We’ll see whether or not he’ll be in the running back rotation as the season goes along. The Cowboys sported the 11th-highest pass percentage in 2023 and, by all accounts, look to be a pass-heavy squad again this season. It’s a low-risk, low-reward add for the Cowboys, who are just looking for veteran bodies in the backfield.

The shelf life for running backs is incredibly short. Cook is entering the 8th year of his career, but doesn’t have the same juice he had just a few seasons ago in Minnesota. Pair his wear-and-tear with the lower-body injuries he’s accumulated, his production last year isn’t too surprising.
