That wasn’t just a loss. That was a splattering. You never want to totally overreact to a week one performance. However, it’s pretty obvious by now that Clemson isn’t in the National Title conversation anymore after losing 28-7 to Duke (link to draft notes). Dabo Swinney either needs to look himself in the mirror or he’s going to be left behind.
Dabo’s biggest strength at Clemson during the heyday was the fact that he kept his entire staff in place and constantly was winning the recruiting battle. The staff has started to peel off and the internal replacements weren’t good enough. That’s why Dabo finally looked himself in the mirror and sought out the help of Garrett Riley.
Except the sport has revolutionized itself during the NIL era. Hiring a good staff is the minimum. Hiring a good staff wasn’t good enough to beat Duke. Clemson remains the only program in America committed to not using the transfer portal. Even Duke was trotting out seven year guys like Myles Jones.
We all saw what’s happening. It’s not an overreaction. Florida State is going to win the ACC on the back of the portal. The Seminoles plugged up the holes on their roster with the portal and brought in guys like Keon Coleman to transform the program. Dabo has decided to just not have a capable receiver room because he’s anti portal.
It’s time to look in the mirror again, Dabo. You can’t just skip a step in the roster construction part of the game. Adapt or die.
