Former New York Mets backup catcher Tomas Nido has been signed to a deal by the Chicago Cubs. Nido, 30, was designated for assignment by the Mets just last week. To make space for Nido, the Cubs have released veteran catcher Yan Gomes.
Tomas Nido will be bringing a solid defensive glove to Chicago, along with some lower to mid-level offensive production. Nido slashed .229/.261/.361 in 83 plate appearances for the Mets this season. Though not stellar numbers, they are excellent in comparison to Yan Gomes. This season, Gomes is slashing a miserable .154/.179/.242 over 91 plate appearances. This is a dramatic drop from his previous season, in which Gomes averaged .267 with 63 RBI.
It is hard to tell where things will go for Yan Gomes. The 13-year vet experienced his best season on the Cleveland Indians in 2016. He slashed .266/.313/.449 as their starting catcher, earning him his lone All-Star selection. His production hovered around this level for years as he bounced around the league. He spent time with the Nationals, Blue Jays, and Athletics before settling in Chicago in 2022. At 36 years old, and with a sub-.200 batting average, I don’t expect clubs to come running for him.
As for Tomas Nido, this will hopefully be the change of scenery he needs to revitalize his career. His numbers fluctuated considerably during his eight-year run with the Mets. He spent most of his time as a backup, or being bounced between the majors and minors. Nido was even DFA’d by the Mets once before, only for the team to re-sign him soon after. He arrives in Chicago just in time to take on his former team. The Cubs will be hosting the Mets for a three game series starting on Friday, June 21.
