The Chicago Cubs are buying? I guess so. The Cubs have acquired third baseman Jeimer Candelario who started his playing career with Chicago. (Scott Taetsch-USA TODAY Sports)

Cubs Acquire Jeimer Candelario

Jeimer Canderlario will return to the team that he made his big league debut with in 2016. The former Cubs farmhand has been dealt by Washington to Chicago. The Cubs have agreed to a deal to acquire the veteran third baseman from the Washington Nationals.

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was the first to report the news:

Candelario, 29, is a 3.3 WAR player thus far in 2023. On the season, the hot corner man is slashing .258/.342/.481 with 16 home runs, six steals, and an OPS+ of 128. Third base has been a bit of a revolving door with Nick Madrigal, Patrick Wisdom, and Chris Morel sharing time at the position. Candelario takes care of that issue.

I still don’t quite get what the Cubs are doing here. Candelario is a free agent after this season. Yes, the Cubs are in the mix still and sit 53-52 on the season. Chicago is 3.5 games out of a wildcard spot and might not even make the playoffs. Even if they do make the playoffs, nobody is taking them seriously as a team that can actually win the World Series. Candelario is a rental and could walk after the season.

DJ Herz and Kevin Made are going back to Washington in the deal. Herz is ranked 16th on the Cubs MLB.com prospect list. Made is unranked. Not a huge acquisition cost but Washington still cashes in on a couple of young players for a guy they probably weren’t going to re-sign in the offseason.
