Cubs Trade Kimbrel To White Sox

Craig Kimbrel, the most valuable relief arm on the market, has been traded to the Chicago White Sox. Kimbrel was highly sought after going into the deadline, and his acquisition creates an incredible one-two punch of Kimbrel and Liam Hendriks at the back end of their bullpen.

Michael Cerami of Bleacher Nation was first on the news.

In return, the Chicago Cubs will receive second basemen Nick Madrigal and RHP Cody Heuer. The White Sox are already running away with the American League Central Divison and looked to bolster their relief arms to prepare for a playoff run. Kimbrel does that and then some. The White Sox also can keep Kimbrel next year, should they pick up his $16 million option. This was the second trade between crosstown rivals, as relief pitcher Ryan Tepera was traded to the White Sox earlier this week. The White Sox now has a bullpen featuring Liam Hendricks, Craig Kimbrel, Ryan Tepera, and Michael Kopech.

Craig Kimbrel Does Not Come Cheap

As one would imagine, the asking price for Kimbrel was quite steep. The White Sox have to give up Nick Madrigal, who, despite being on the 60-day Injured List, has emerged as a quality baseball player with a ton of speed. In addition to Madrigal, the White Sox are also sending over RHP Cody Heuer, a proven MLB pitcher. While this is a big move for the White Sox to lock down their bullpen, we should not overlook the return for the Cubs. The Cubs now have their second basemen of the future and a quality pitcher, all in exchange for a rental. Maybe the White Sox overpaid a bit for Kimbrel, but he immediately makes their bullpen that more dangerous. Considering other contenders such as the Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros were also in on Kimbrel, the White Sox now don’t have to worry about facing him in October.
