Sometimes the best trades are the ones you don’t make. As we’ve explained at length, I’m not sure this is arguable but Craig Breslow has basically lost every trade he’s made to this point. He almost conned himself again in the pursuit of more pitching. If Breslow would have pulled the trigger on this trade Triston Casas, I’m pretty sure Red Sox fans would have rioted.
You can’t make up how stupid this Breslow is. It would be one thing if Casas was included in a package for Logan Gilbert. He really tried to trade Casas for their 5th or 6th best starter? This man really has NO clue and I can’t believe Jerry Dipoto didn’t laugh at him while executing this trade. I frankly can’t believe Seattle was unwilling to trade Bryce Miller or Bryan Woo with the amount of pitching depth they have if it meant they were bringing Casas to Seattle.
It sure sounds like Seattle prefers to trade Luis Castillo if they opt to deal from their starting rotation. It’s very possible the Sox will explore that route, but it certainly won’t cost them Casas given Castillo’s salary. All I know is, thank the heavens this trade never happened. What an awful mistake it would have been to trade Casas before he even entered his prime. The best Sox fans can hope for now is if they can land Castillo at a reasonable price tag.
