Coyotes Sign Matt Dumba
Given the drama going on with the Coyotes arena dilemma, the pressure is on to improve the team. Arizona will now add another high profile defensemen to town this offseason. After having already traded for Sean Durzi, the Coyotes have agreed to a deal with Matt Dumba.
PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan was the first to report the news:
Dumba, 29, has spent his entire 10-year career with Minnesota to this point. It’s hard to know which guy the Coyotes are getting. Dumba had a weird outlier year in 2017-18 when he played in all 82 games and posted 50 points. Dumba has not cracked 35 points in any other season of his career.
The 2022-23 season for Dumba was straight up terrible. The former 7th overall pick in the 2012 NHL Draft posted four goals, 14 points, and -8 rating. All were all career lows and that came across 21:17 minutes of ice time per game. If that’s the guy the Coyotes get this year, I’m not sure they are getting a positive contributor.
The left side of the Coytes blue line actually looks okay or at least better than it has been. JJ Moser, Juuso Valimaki, and Sean Durzi isn’t a bad one, two, three. The right side, however, is a bit rough. Dumba will likely get those top pair minutes next to Moser. It’s a chance for him to showcase his talent with plenty of opportunites to eat ice time. It’s not a terrible spot for Dumba to rebuild his value in a larger role.
Fantasy wise, there probably isn’t any value here for those that are curious. Durzi and Valimaki should eat the powerplay slots.
