Cowboys Hire Brian Schottenheimer As Next Head Coach

Mike McCarthy is out. Mary Schottenheimer’s son is in. The Cowboys have decided to promote from within and are hiring offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer as their next head coach.

Adam Schefter of ESPN was the first to report the news:

The Cowboys team website also released a statement on the news.

FRISCO, Texas — Brian Schottenheimer is all set to officially become the 10th head coach in the history of the Dallas Cowboys, the two sides agreeing to terms on Friday evening after two extensive interviews earlier in the week.”

The team will also hold a presser on Monday, Jan. 27 at 11 a.m. CT announcing the new hire.

Schottenheimer, 51, is in fact the son of the legend Marty Schottenheimer but it took him a fair amount of time to get his first head coaching job. Michael Lombardi spoke glowingly of Schottenheimer on a recent episode of the Pat McAfee show and pretty much made that same point. This isn’t like Lane Kiffin who got his first opportunity at such a young age and wasn’t ready. Schottenheimer has made multiple stops in the NFL and in college and if he learned anything from his dad, this is a really good hire.

This part isn’t official but if I had to guess, Matt Eberflus is likely a candidate to return to Dallas as the defensive coordinator. They could opt to stick with Mike Zimmer but it’s possible that he ends up retiring. Don’t be surprised if it’s Eberflus. You heard it here first.
