The Red Sox still haven’t replaced Xander Bogaerts. After Bogaerts departed for monster dollars in San Diego, the Sox have still been looking for a way to replace him. Is there a chance that Jazz Chisholm becomes the Red Sox shortstop in 2023? Chaim Bloom has taken a lot of heat this offseason, but landing a guy like Chisholm would do a lot to make Red Sox fans feel hopeful again.
Chisholm would quickly become a beloved character in Boston. Chisholm is a charismatic player that wears his heart on his sleeve. Someone that gives the clubhouse an energy spark that’s desperately needed. Chisholm has made massive improvements to his defensive game notching a fielding percentage of .982 a year ago. He also has sneaky power in the bat for a skinny guy (130 OPS+ in 2022).
Of course, the Marlins are not obligated to trade Chisholm. However, there have been some reports that Miami is thirsty for Triston Casas and they’re willing to move mountains to make it happen. Trading Casas appears unthinkable but maybe it’s something you entertain if it includes a package of Chisholm and young starting pitching like Edward Cabrera. Something that appears to be on the table from a Miami perspective.
The Red Sox need to be honest with themselves. Until they find a real replacement for Bogaerts, this team is not a real contender. Trevor Story should have a nice rebound year but the concerns about his fading arm strength are real. They signed him to be a second basemen for a reason. Christian Arroyo is a nice player but shouldn’t be an everyday option either. This team got worse and they know it.
The mission should remain the same. Get Rafael Devers signed and find a shortstop. Could Jazz be that guy? Could Fernando Tatis be that guy? Could they try to get into the mix late with Carlos Correa? The clock is ticking.
