I have a sneaky suspicion that the Jets don’t even slightly care about this news. Actually, they’re probably thrilled about it. Corey Davis is officially calling it quits and has retired from the NFL.
The former Western Michigan product announced his intentions via Instagram.
“For some time now I’ve been contemplating stepping away from the sport of football,” Davis said. “This decision has not been easy. Although I am a deep person, I am a man of few words. I’ve been searching my heart for what to do and I feel that stepping away from the game is the best path for me at this time. I have more blessings than I could have ever imagined — I have an amazing family, a beautiful wife and two healthy children that I look forward to spending more time with.
“I am truly grateful for all the opportunities I have had and will continue to have on my journey. Thank you to my family and friends and the Jets organization for supporting me through this process.”
From a contract standpoint, the Jets can’t be mad about this decision. They might even have some sort of back-door agreement that forced this to happen. Davis was in the final year of a three-year, $37.5 million deal that was signed in 2021. That’s not the type of cap hit the Jets want to carry for a below-average wide receiver.
Davis, 28, was probably going to get cut as teams get down to their 53-man roster. Garrett Wilson, Allen Lazard, Mecole Hardman, and Randall Cobb were already locked in. Was Davis really going to be the 5th option here? Did Davis not want to get seen getting cut on Hard Knocks?
I hate that I have to do this now but I don’t think I’ll ever get another chance to do so. Corey Davis sucked and it’s another win for scout Trey. Here’s your proof that I thought the Titans totally botched that draft by taking him. It remains insane that these teams don’t call me.
The former Titans first round pick in 2017 finishes his career with 273 receptions, 3,879 yards, and 17 touchdowns. Jamaal Williams had 17 touchdowns last year. I just figured I had to mention that part.
