Commanders Fire Ron Rivera
In the least surprising news of all time, the Washington Commanders have fired Ron Rivera. After leading his team to the second worst record in the league, Rivera is out. With new owner Josh Harris taking over, Rivera felt like a lame duck pretty much all season.
ESPN reported the news as it comes with a report from the NBA as well. Bob Myers is joining the franchise while getting to remain with ESPN. I’ll cover that in a separate post next.
The Commanders put out a statement first revealing the news of Rivera’s departure.
Time will tell who becomes the next head coach of the Commanders. The only thing that’s clear is that it probably won’t go to Eric Bieniemy. If that were the case, don’t you think they would have given him a trial run instead of letting Rivera crash the boat for the rest of the season?
Rivera needed to be fired. His 26-40-1 record speaks for itself. It’s not like they have zero players either. Rivera has proven that he’s not a leader and frankly, I have no idea what he actually does other than delegate. That’s not including the debacle of last year. Rivera probably should have been fired a year earlier.
Who will the Commanders hire to be their next head coach? Holding the second pick in the draft certainly helps recruiting matters. Having an owner that’s not Daniel Snyder sure as hell helps too. For Washington, maybe brighter days are ahead.
