I’m not sure what’s going on with the comedy industry, but I’m concerned. I wouldn’t call myself a professional reviewer of stand-up comedy, but I know funny when I see it. Trust me, I don’t bring much to the table outside of folding laundry, cooking, and this sports thing. The only reason my friends keep me around is because I’m funny and their dog likes me.
I love a good comedy special. The problem is I just don’t find that many funny so I rarely ever put them on. Tom Segura, Bert Kreischer, and Ali Wong all get my stamp of approval. A few others but you get the point. I’m still hoping I get the green light on that date with Ali since she dumped her husband and I totally called it, but that’s a story for another day.
This part might be boring but I’ll try to summarize it quickly so I can get to my actual point:
I have now seen two comedy specials. The first was for Bill Burr called Friends Who Kill. It was strange. Bill Burr goes up there, tells 15 minutes worth of jokes, walks off the set and introduces a handful of other comics and even a band, then calls it a night.
I almost wrote a review on the comedy, but I didn’t enjoy it. In fact, if I had paid money for that show, I would have been pissed. I came to see Bill Burr. Not NINE of his friends that need more money and attention. Some of them (cough Steph Tolev) were so bad I’m mad I wasted that moment of time in my life.
Turns it this wasn’t a one time thing that Bill Burr just came up with to get some attention for his friends. For the specials that have come out this year – Snoop Dogg, Pete Davidson, and Amy Schumer have all followed this same approach.
What happened to competition? Where is this butt buddy stuff coming from? Listen, I’m all for riding and dying for your support system. Maybe those people also aren’t as popular because they’re not good at it?
I won’t lie, some of them were good. I’m not saying all of them were bad. NINE people don’t deserve that air time. How bout you ride for one or two to do that at the end of your 45 minute? show. It feels like the comics have decided they don’t need to actually write their own jokes anymore. Come up with two good ones, then walk off the stage and call it a night. Now that’s a scam right there. Kuddos to them. Maybe I’d do it too. These are dark times. We can’t lose this too.
I’m out on this butt buddy thing in the comedy industry. That’s right, I’m calling all of you out. Stop it. Tell better jokes and stop passing off the work to your friends that need more attention. Trust me, that ain’t my mentality here. If you’re coming with me, you better be a man/girl rocket in the work ethic/talent department. We already went backward as a society in the woman’s rights department. I don’t need my comedy industry going down the tubes too.
Side note: I’m not sure if butt buddy is the right term to use here but I don’t know what else to call it in this instance. I’m open to suggestions for altering the post.
