Todd Helton is coming back to the Mile High City.
The Colorado Rockies announced that the former 1B for the Rockies will be joining the team as a Special Assistant. Per Danielle Allentruck of The Denver Gazette, Helton’s main responsibility will be working along aside the team’s minor league players, and Allentruck noted that Helton has already been doing so, working with Rockies prospect Michael Toglia (Rockies first-round pick from 2019) during Spring Training this year.
Todd Helton is a legend in Denver, having spent all 17 years of his major league career in the Mile High City wearing the purple and grey. Helton is the Rockies’ all-time leader in games, plate appearances, home runs, runs, hits, doubles, RBI, walks, and total bases. The potential Hall of Famer batted .316/.414/.539 with 369 homers while playing for the Rockies. Helton was named an all-star on five separate occasions while winning four Silver Slugger Awards and three Gold Gloves. Whenever you travel down to Blake Street to watch the Rockies play, you are guaranteed to see tons of Todd Helton jerseys wherever you look. Helton is undoubtedly a member of the Rockies Mount Rushmore.
Typically, whenever you hear the words “special assistant” in regards to a former player coming back, there is no true way of knowing how or where the player in question will help out. For Helton, working alongside the players in the Rockies farm system is a nice place to start, and if he can help their 23rd ranked farm system, it will be a positive signing. No matter what the case happens to end up being, Rockies fans and the people of Denver are glad to see Todd Helton back affiliated with the team in any capacity.
