Utah’s Cole Bishop is next up on the docket to receive their 2024 NFL Draft profile. The former Ute played a key part in a Utah defense and can be seen all over the field. The tape is kind to Bishop, and after a stellar performance at the NFL Combine, should he be higher on NFL teams’ radars? Let’s talk about it.
Bishop, a former three-star recruit out of Georgia, committed to Utah in 2021 and immediately saw the field, playing in ten games as a True Freshman. I don’t care if it’s at Utah, if you are that good to where a D-1 Power Five school is running you out as a True Freshman, I am in. During his three years with the Utes, he totaled 197 tackles, 7.5(!) sacks and three interceptions. The QB rating when he was targeted was a measly 92.5, however, his final season was down at 66 which is much better.
Cole Bishop is a stellar blitzer. He’s got a great feel for the line and the IQ to let holes develop to find where to get in and run to the backfield. Great frame (6’2, 210 lbs) and can play down as Box Safety and can roam as your center fielder. 4.45 40 time is huge for him. He is much better playing down in man coverage against Tight Ends or covering Running Backs out of the backfield. Knee bend is deep, and can break out quickly. More than a willing tackler.
The game tape doesn’t show top-end speed, but like I said above 4.45 is massive for him and should ease the minds of NFL GMs who had doubts about his speed. Doesn’t have the best zone coverage skills, at least what you’d want from your safety. He looks to leave his zone early to get downhill instead of trusting the guys ahead of him and playing his assignment. You’d like to see the hips flip with a little more fluidity to get to the boundary in man coverage.
I think Cole Bishop could develop into a quality player at the next level. He’s not going to be someone you can roll out Week One and expect to hold his own but should be a tremendous special teamer while he learns the nuisances of the game. I have a third-round grade on Bishop, but I could see him going a tad higher than this based on that combine performance.
